Last Sunday service

Our last Sunday service as Calvary Latvia was held on November 11th, 2012. Lena and I have been serving the Lord in Latvia for the last 6 years and now we believe he is calling us to join the staff at Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe, that we may equip more future missionaries. The video shows clips from our time of worship, me passing on the great commission and others testifying to how he has changed lives through Calvary Latvia.

Powers Update (October 2012)

Greetings from Latvia!
Did you hear that we are moving from Latvia to Hungary?

Go make disciples in all nations...

In this last year of making disciples in Latvia, Lena and I felt that our time here would come to an end and that God was leading us to join a missionary team in another country in Europe.

Last month, we visited Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe (in Vajta, Hungary) and the Lord confirmed that He is calling us to join the team of missionaries there in 2013.

So we are planning to finish well in Latvia in November, move to Hungary in December, study in January, and start teaching at CCBCE in February.

Vision for 2013

Our call to be missionaries in Europe started in 1999 when Lena and I were students at CCBCE. Now we have an opportunity to teach a new generation of Bible college students and to lead future missionaries on outreaches in Europe.

We will serve in various ministries including:
  • teaching classes,
  • evangelism,
  • discipleship,
  • sound,
  • worship
  • a home fellowship
I also look forward to leading students on outreaches to other European countries. Evan Valerik (pictured below) is in the Missions Training Program at CCBCE.

I invited him to Latvia for his 30-day-outreach when I visited CCBCE to teach on Apologetics in Spring 2012. So he came in June and helped us with devotions, evangelism, youth ministry, worship and fellowship at Calvary Latvia.

The fruitfulness of our teamwork was one of the signs that Lena and I should be part of a missionary team again and that we could help train future missionaries like Evan. He had a great attitude spending hours editing episodes for my new radio show "Verse by Verse".

We have permission to keep broadcasting "Verse By Verse" on Latvian radio (nation-wide) every Saturday night from 10:00-10:15pm - even AFTER we move to Hungary! I can continue to record my teachings through Romans at CCBCE and send the MP3 to Latvian Christian radio. If you would like sponsor the broadcast, you can donate through the PayPal button on brentenpowers.podomatic.com.  While you are there, please subscribe to the podcast!

Finishing Well In Latvia

Since we moved to Latvia 6 years ago, I have sought to declare the whole counsel of God. I have taught though the whole Old Testament and half of the New Testament.  We have 8 weeks left to run our race and pass the torch in Latvia.

I've been equipping the saints for different ministries and entrusting the word to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Martin was saved 3 years ago when I was preaching on the streets. Now he is raised up to preach the gospel every Friday night in the center of Riga.

Last week, I shared the gospel with Gatis (photo above) in a laundromat and he became a believer. He started coming to church and was amazed by the grace of God. Martin and I will lead him through 10 Bible studies, using the same New Believer Study Guide that I led Martin through before.

"What you have heard from me
in the presence of many witnesses
entrust to faithful men
who will be able to teach others also."
2 (Timothy 2:2)

On November 11th, will complete 4 years of making disciples at Calvary Latvia. I am leading the church to transition into another good Bible-teaching church with a pastor I know and trust.

Pastor Andy loves Jesus and feeds the sheep well with verse-by-verse Bible teaching.

Additionally, I have taught a group of young Latvians how to do inductive Bible study.  They will study 1 John together as a home fellowship.

So by God's grace we are accomplishing the mission God has given us in Latvia. We praise the Lord for the fruit of faithful believers growing in truth and love toward God and one another.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good,
for IN DUE SEASON WE WILL REAP,
if we do not give up."
(Galatians 6:9)

HOW YOU CAN HELP

To move to Hungary: We need $7,500 (minimum) for moving expenses.

Thankfully, some of our basic needs are provided for as missionary staff at CCBCE, including:
- rent
- utilities
- most meals (when we eat in the cafeteria).

But we also need to raise some support for monthly expenses. Roughly $1,500 per month is all we need,
- to live and serve in Hungary, training up Bible college students, going on ourtreaches with them to other countries,
- to spread the gospel and make disciples and encourage and strengthen the church in Europe.

"Could this thing be?"

One of the clear messages in scripture is that God can guide and provide and do exceedingly abundantly beyond all you can ask or imagine.

I read to my family today from 2 Kings 6 and 7.  When the king of Isreal was in Samaria and was trapped in the city by the enemy camp and they were running out of food and some were resorting to cannibalism. The king sent a captain to kill Elisha, the man of God, because he was mad at God. Elisha said to the captain that the famine would end in a day, but the response was "If the LORD himself should make windows in heaven, could such a thing happen?" By the end of the chapter you see that is exactly what happened but the one who doubted did not get to partake of the promise, but was instead trampled. The point is, God can and will do what he says and those who step out in faith will partake of the promises of God.

And it was interesting how God provided for the salvation of the city. Four lepers who were starving to death outside the gates of Samaria thinking "Why are we sitting here until we die?". Their only hope for survival was going into the enemies camp looking for food but there was a chance they could be killed, but since they were going to die anyway it was worth taking that risk. And it payed off! The Lord had sent a sound of chariots to the enemy camp and made them flee without all their tents, horses, food, clothes, tents, gold and instruments,. The lepers entered the camp, they ate, drank and started hiding the stuff for themselves. Then they said to one another, "We are not doing right. This day is a day of GOOD NEWS. If we are silent and wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come; LET US GO AND TELL the king's household." (2 Kings 7:9)

God wants us to go into all the world and share the good news of eternal life in Jesus. Where God guides, God provides. What did God tell you? Seek first His kingdom and righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. God knows you need food, drinks, clothing, transportation, money, instruments, etc.. Don't worry how. Wait on Him and He will show you when the time comes to step out in faith. Resist the spiritual enemy and he will flee from you. Walk in those good works which He has created you for and prepared for you (see Eph 2:10). And then will you hide His blessings for yourself or will you do what is right and share the good news with those who are dying? Will you shrink back and be destroyed OR follow and be satisfied?

"But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls." (Hebrews 10:39)
